Basmati

  • India is the world’s leading producer and exporter of Basmati rice, admired for its long grains, delicate aroma, and rich flavor.
  • It is a healthy staple, naturally low in fat and gluten-free, with a low to medium glycemic index ideal for balanced diets.
  • Key varieties include 1121Pusa Basmati, and Traditional Basmati, known for exceptional elongation and non-stick texture after cooking.
  • Major growing regions are Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, with fertile plains and ideal climatic conditions.
  • Sown during June–July and harvested in October–November, Basmati rice thrives in well-drained, alluvial soils.
  • Major export destinations include Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, USA, and UK, with high demand for both raw and parboiled rice.

Indrayani

  • Indrayani rice is a premium aromatic variety primarily grown in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, especially in the Pune, Nashik, and Ahmednagar regions.
  • Known for its short to medium grain, soft texture, and naturally sweet fragrance, Indrayani is favored for traditional Maharashtrian dishes like varan-bhaat and masale bhaat.
  • It is a healthy choice—naturally gluten-free, easy to digest, and rich in essential nutrients, making it suitable for everyday meals.
  •  Unlike Basmati, Indrayani grains become soft and slightly sticky after cooking, which enhances the flavor absorption in regional curries and lentils.
  • It is sown with the onset of monsoon (June–July) and harvested between October and December, flourishing in the black and alluvial soils of the Deccan plateau.
  •  Although not as widely exported as Basmati, Indrayani has a loyal consumer base in India and among the Maharashtrian diaspora across the US, UK, and Gulf countries.

Ambemohar

  • Ambemohar is a traditional aromatic rice variety native to Maharashtra, especially cultivated in the foothills of the Western Ghats in Pune, Raigad, and Nashik districts.
  •  Renowned for its distinctive mango blossom-like fragrance (hence the name Ambemohar, meaning “mango blossom”), it is prized in Maharashtrian cuisine for its soft, fluffy texture when cooked.
  • This short-grain rice is naturally gluten-free, easy to digest, and ideal for dishes like bhatachi pej (rice porridge), masale bhaat, and festive preparations.
  • Unlike long-grain varieties, Ambemohar grains are small, delicate, and tend to clump slightly after cooking—perfect for comfort foods and traditional thalis.
  • Grown during the monsoon season (June–July sowing; harvested in November–December), it thrives in the rich, rain-fed soils of the Sahyadri range.
  •  While primarily consumed domestically due to limited yields, it is highly sought-after in niche export markets for its heritage value and unique aroma.

Sona Masuri

  • Sona Masuri (also spelled Sona Mahsuri) is a premium medium-grain rice variety predominantly grown in the southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka.
  • Known for its lightweight, aromatic grains and soft texture, Sona Masuri is a staple in South Indian households and widely used in dishes like lemon rice, pongal, and biryani.
  •  Naturally low in starch, fat, and gluten, it’s an excellent choice for health-conscious diets and daily consumption.
  • The grains remain separate and fluffy after cooking, making it ideal for both plain rice dishes and lightly spiced preparations.
  • Cultivated mainly during the Kharif season (June–July sowing; harvested in November–January), it grows well in fertile deltaic and irrigated soils.
  • Sona Masuri enjoys strong domestic demand and is also exported extensively to the USA, Canada, Australia, UAE, and Southeast Asian countries, both in raw and parboiled forms.
